You're running out of disk space? You want to clean your hard disk to free up some space and get rid of the clutter? Sponge is a tool to keep your Mac clean and tidy. With Sponge you can reclaim your disk space by removing applications, finding duplicates and tracking down large files.I recently went through a verrrrry thorough drive clean up so I was interested to see what Sponge could do.
The first thing I did was scan my Applications folder. Not too many surprises here but I did shed a few apps I knew I was never going to use again. Then I did a scan for "Disk Hogs" which gave me a readout of what folders and files were taking up the most room. This is a feature available from several utilities (and even terminal if you like the du command) so it wasn't impressive but for new and novice users this was a very easy way to find out what's clogging up their nice, new hard drives. I then ran the "Find Duplicates" which was a nice, simple way to find duplicate files. I've seen more advanced applications that could do this but again, this app seems to be aimed at the novice user so it makes sense. Unfortunately the app crashed while I was running that task. I did ask it to scan the whole drive so maybe I overloaded it.
This application could help the new or novice Mac user but it was a bit too simplistic and limited for my tastes and also crashed in the first 10 minutes of using it. I'll stick to terminal.
